The National Command of the Producers Classes and entrepreneurial anti-communism (1964)

Abstract

This article deals with a decisive moment in the political militancy of the Brazilian business community in the final crisis of João Goulart’s government (1961-1964). The focus is on Rio de Janeiros’s business community, which led, in March 1964, the creation of the National Command of the Productive Classes (CNCP), an instrument to immediately combat the government in the areas of politics and armed violence. The aim, with the publication of the first results of research on the entity, is to contribute to the advancement of knowledge about the participation of bourgeois segments in the 1964 Coup and to its characterization as business-military.
