Changing indications for penetrating keratoplasty 1990-1997

SUMMARY

Purpose:

To record the changes in the indications for penetrating keratoplasty in the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro and compare the results with the statistics of other University Departments in Brazil.

Methods:

We analyzed the waiting list for penetrating keratoplasty in the Department of Ophthalmology of the University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, between 1995 and 1997.

Results:

Our results demonstrate that the five most common indications were pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (35.29%), keratoconus (9.41%c), Fuchs endothelial dystrophy (8.24%o), aphakic bullous keratopathy (7.06%c) and herpetic keratitis (7.06%c).

Conclusions:

There were changes in the indications for penetrating keratoplasty between the present study and the study previously published by the authors in 1990.
