The author made a statistic study of all admissions to the Mental Hospital of Recife (State of Pernambuco) from 1916 to 1930; the percentage of alcoholists in relation to all patients entered in the hospital is of 12.4%. The lower percentage corresponds to the years 1925 (6.91%) and 1920 (8.15%). The largest proportion of alcoholists refers to the years 1922 (22.6%) and 1923 (17.72%). It was performed a comparative study of the prevailing data in the State of Pernambuco and the incidence of alcoholic psychoses in foreign countries. The 1931 and 1935 statistics enabled him to reach a more detailed conclusion. Concerning to sex, it was noted that a high proportion of alcoholists were of the feminine sex, contrarily to what is generally observed in other countries. The incidence of alcoholists, in relation to age, is higher between the ages of 31 to 35 for men, and 26 to 30 for women. The largest number of alcoholists is found among nationals. The greater contribuition of patients, in reference to race, is given by negro element. It is the confirmation of a phenomenon already noticed in the United States of America, where it is prevalent the number of alcoholists of the negro race. Among the married people there are more alcoholists than among single and widows. A definite percentual prominence is shown by patients of humble conditions: industrial, agricultural and commercial workers. The capital of the State contributes with 46.6% of the total of patients; this is a curious fact worthy to notice because such percentage concerns to a population six times smaller than that of the remainder of the State. The author suggests some explanations about this difference, emphasizing the easiness of hospitality in the urban center, the conditions of men in town, and the nutriotional state of the workmen in Recife City (Pernambuco). The psychopathic ancestry of the alcoholists is heavy. In regard to the way the toxic is used, 83.1% of the patients were inveterate, 16.9% were only occasional alcoholists.
