Resistance of soybean to insects: III. Breeding lines for resistance to stink bugs

In order to transfer the resistance to stink bugs of the soybean line IAC 73/228 to commercial varieties, crosses between this line and the cultivars Paraná, Bossier, Santa Rosa, UFV-1 and IAC-7 were made. The modified pedigree method was used, being the fines cultivated under field conditions in the wet warm season and, under greenhouse conditions, in the dry cold season. Artificial infestations of Nezara viridula (L.) were made in greenhouse, and of Euschistus heros (Fabr,), Piezodorus guildinii (West.) and N. viridula, in. the field; these insects were collected on soybean crops. The screening criteria used were: a) high number of full pods in the upper part of the plants; b) absence of foliar retention; c) high insertion of the first pods; d) erect plants; e) smooth and clear seeds, and f) high productivity. Among the screened lines, it was outstanding IAC 80/596-2, an F5 line of median cycle descendent of a cross between IAC 73/228 and 'UFV-1'. IAC 80/596-2 presented adequate oil content, absence of foliar retention even under high stink bug infestation, erect aspect and productivity significantly higher than the cultivar Paraná. It was verified that it is possible to transfer the resistance to stink bugs of IAC 73/228 to commercial varieties. Through this breeding program it is possible to select against the principal undesirable characteristics of IAC 73/228 which are procumbent growth habit, low insertion of the first pods, low oil content and long cycle.
