Cutting of potato seed tubers: Part IV - Influence of the environment on the stored material and of the manner and the time of cutting seed potatoes

In order to study the behavior of tubers of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) at different times after harvest, submitted to different environments during the storage, four trials were carried out of preliminary nature, using material of different sources. The experiments were performed in Campinas where the altitude of about 600 meters is not indicated for such an operation. In two of the rials, material cut crosswise and lengthwise was compared, and in the other two, just material cut lengthwise. Yields as well as defects, development of plants, etc., of tubers that had been cut immediately after harvest and before germination were compared with the same data relative to tubers that had been cut after germination, shortly before planting. In a general way, there were no differences in the behavior of the whole material and of that cut before germination. On the other side, tubers cut after germination showed to be inferior presenting shortage in their stands and production.
