Cytological observations on Pelargonium

This paper presents the basic cytological studies on some commercial varieties of Pelargonium, which have been cultivated in our Institute for oil production. Pollen grains and embryo sac are formed after a normal process, but fertilization takes place very rarely; in the fertilized embryo sacs only initial divisions of the embryo and endosperm have been found. There is a mechanism for male sterility besides some physiological disturbances in all these varieties. Following the same scheme, some observations have been made on three varieties of showing Pelargonium. The sterile varieties are cytologically similar to the commercial varieties, but do not show a mechanism for male sterility. In the fertile varieties seed production is normal.
