When security is the priority: Management practices in hybrid institutions interfacing with prison

By dialoguing two distinct research studies, one conducted in a hospital of custody and psychiatric treatment (HCTP) and another in detention centers for adolescents considered “in conflict with the law”, this article aims to analyze the centrality of security processes in in these institutions located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The, here named, “hybrid institutions interfacing with prison” are legally designed as non-punitive organizations, but, since their conception, they link the deprivation of liberty with other non-prison institutions, and this allows them to punish individuals considered legally unimputable or semi-imputable.
