Control and punishment: An analysis of the disciplinary sanctions in male prisions of the state of Rio de Janeiro

In this article, we identified the pattern of application of disciplinary sanctions listed in article 53 of the Brazilian Penitentiary Law (Law nº 7.210/1984) by the administration in male prisons located in the state of Rio de Janeiro. To achieve this, we will address the following questions with a documentary analysis of 105 disciplinary proceedings: (i) which disciplinary sanctions are most frequently imposed, and (ii) which disciplinary infractions are most attributed to inmates by the prison administration? The article arguments that there exists a differential management of illegalities in the realm of attributing infractions and disciplinary sanctions, highlighting the administrative pursuit of certain behaviors over others.
