Meta-research in the field of education policy: conceptual and methodological elements

ABSTRACT

The paper discusses conceptual and methodological elements of meta-research (research about research) in the field of Education Policy. From the epistemological approach of Education Policy, a methodological proposal for meta-research on Education Policy is presented. It argues that meta-research contributes do the understanding of the current situation of research in the field, supporting both for the improvement of research and the researcher training.

Teoria formal fundamentada	Abordagem de pesquisa indutiva que usa descobertas de estudos da teoria fundamentada substantiva para sintetizar uma nova teoria formal fundamentada (KEARNEY, 1998a).
Meta-análise	Termo frequentemente utilizado para descrever a combinação estatística e a análise de resultados de estudos múltiplos de pesquisa quantitativa (EGGER; SMITH, 1997). Devido à associação comum do termo a métodos quantitativos e à agregação de dados versus interpretação, seu uso em relação à metassíntese qualitativa é desencorajado.
Metaestudo	Abordagem indutiva de pesquisa envolvendo a análise e a interpretação de teorias, de métodos e de resultados de pesquisa em estudos qualitativos, e a síntese desse trabalho para formular novas interpretações.
Análise de meta-dados	Análise e interpretação dos resultados em relatos múltiplos de pesquisa qualitativa.
Metamétodo	Análise e interpretação de aplicações metodológicas em relatos múltiplos de pesquisa qualitativa.
Metateoria	Análise e interpretação de perspectivas teóricas, filosóficas e cognitivas; fontes e pressupostos; e contextos em múltiplos estudos qualitativos (PATERSON; THORNE; DEWIS, 2001).
Metassíntese	Um termo genérico que se refere à síntese de descobertas em múltiplos relatos qualitativos para criar uma nova interpretação. Tipos propostos de metassíntese incluem construção de teoria, metaestudo, teoria formal fundamentada, explanação da teoria e estudo descritivo.

Grounded formal theory	Inductive research approach that uses findings from substantive grounded theory studies to synthesize a new grounded formal theory (Kearney, 1998a).
Meta-analysis	Term frequently used to describe the statistical combining and analysis of results from multiple quantitative research studies (Egger & Smith, 1997). Because of the term’s common association with quantitative methods and data aggregation versus interpretation, its use in relationship to qualitative metasynthesis is discouraged.
Metastudy	Inductive research approach involving the analysis and interpretation of theory, methods, and research findings across qualitative studies, and the synthesis of this work to formulate new interpretations.
Meta-data analysis	Analysis and interpretation of findings across multiple qualitative research reports.
Metamethod	Analysis and interpretation of methodological applications across multiple qualitative research reports.
Metatheory	Analysis and interpretation of theoretical, philosophical, and cognitive perspectives; sources and assumptions; and contexts across multiple qualitative studies (Paterson, Thorne, & Dewis, 2001).
Metasynthesis	Umbrella term referring to the synthesis of findings across multiple qualitative reports to create a new interpretation. Proposed types of metasyntheses include theory building, metastudy, grounded formal theory, theory explication, and descriptive study.
