Functional capacity in patients with diabetes mellitus in Matinhos city, Paraná

Diabetes mellitus (DM) occurs due to an inadequate chronic metabolic dysfunction, characterized by hyperglycemia with carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism disorders. The DM has an important impact on physical and functional profiles of the subjects; among these variables, there is the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MW). The aim of this study was to analyze the functional capacity, by distance walked in 6MW, of subjects with DM types 1 (DM1) and (DM2) 2 from Health Family Strategy (HFSs) of Community Health Agent Program (CHAP) in Matinhos city, Paraná. From 800 patients registered at the HFS's and CHAP, 497 were contacted, and 153 were included in this study, of which 1.30% with DM1 and 98.69% with DM2. Their mean age was 60.49±11.24 years, the mean blood glucose was 173.18 mg/dL and mean body mass, height and body mass index were respectively: 76.69±14.07 kg, 1.62± 0.08 m and 29.11±4.61 kg/m². There was no correlation between blood glucose and age (r=0.023), age and 6MW (r=-0.056) and blood glucose and 6MW (r=0.11). We observed that 28.10% of patients had cardiovascular disease, 60.13% had hypertension and 16.99% were smokers. We found that drug treatment was the most common among the treatments diet and exercise. Regarding the 6MW test, it was found a significant difference (p<0.0001) between the distance specified by the equation of reference and the distance obtained by the participants, demonstrating that patients with DM did not reach the expected grades. Thus, it would be necessary to perform a multidisciplinary program aimed at this population, in order to include physical activities and diet to minimize the effects of DM on the functional aspects of these patients.
