Artistic practices in Communication and Media Studies research: situating epistemological matters

Abstract

The present article starts from the observation of an absence or timid presence of Communication in the debate about art-based research. To address this, it discusses the process of epistemologization of arts, provides definitions of artistic research, and relates it to more common references in the fields of Communication and Media Studies. This is an exploratory research with a methodological review, and the main findings indicate a lack of initiative in Communication that prioritizes artistic research as a central methodology in scholarly work.
