Capital social e suas implicações para o estudo das organizações

The concept of social capital, despite its acknowledged importance for several branches of the social sciences, has not as yet been paid due attention by quite a few scholars in the organizational field. Needless to say that some of its analytical focus seem to be rather useful, as, for instance, underlying hypotheses for the ability of certain social groups to weave meaningful networks, work together and undertake collective actions. This may be particularly true now, in the context of the challenges brought about by globalization and its related new information technologies. As such, most traditional models in the field - versed in terms of hierarchy, formal tools for control and well defined organizational bonds - have been either discarded or are under severe scrutiny. Our purpose here is to look into its conceptual roots, its repercussions into the relevant literature and its supporting possibilities for feeding organizational studies. Our ultimate goal is to provide for some guidance and inducement concerning further research touching on the meaning and usefulness of social capital for organizational development in Brazil.
