Social representations of violence in “String Literature” about cangaço

Cangaço is a sort of social banditism, typical of the Brazilian Northeast, whose stories published at the cordel´s pamphlets can communicate the social representation about many types of social objects, including violence. The main objective of this work was to research the social representation of violence at the cordel´s pamphlets about cangaço. Twelve (12) pamphlets were examined by the software ALCESTE which produced four (4) word classes grouped in two axes: the first one is related to the journalistic narrative of cangaço and the second axis is strongly characterized by ideas that indicate a moral judgment about the social actors involved, producing a social identity to northeastern people, “sertanejos” and “cangaceiros”.
