Mission and Decoloniality. Notes for a Latin American Missionary Paradigm in a Decolonial Perspective

ABSTRACT

The present essay, developed as notes, proposes to critically rethink the missionary reason, in its fundamental assumptions and in its performance, in light of Latin American decolonial thought. Fundamental contributions are drawn from the conciliar turn and the Latin American, post-conciliar tradition. From a triumphant mission of Christendom, a process of decolonization of the mission begins. From the pretense of a spiritual conquest, we come to the need for a conversion of the Church in the way it works with the poor and with others. To advance in the configuration of a missionary paradigm in a decolonial perspective, some theological, pastoral and spiritual perspectives are suggested. The decolonization of the mission entails a lengthy process of unlearning and relearning, in the certainty of the coming of a Kingdom opposed to all forms of violence, oppression and domination, to be announced as a gift and as hope.
