Freedom and Fear: The Impact of Liberal Ideas in Rio de Janeiro during the First Reign

ABSTRACT

The liberal ideals of the Porto Revolution recognized popular representation and government based on laws. If there was a fear of the return of absolutism, there was especially a fear of how liberal ideas would be drawn on Brazilian soil and impact the lives of the citizens. Therefore, there was increased control and vigilance regarding the ideas that circulated and those who landed in Brazil, since the Court was multiethnic and multiracial, knowing well what was happening in the Atlantic world. There was a popular constitutionalism among poor white workers, slaves and freedmen, who expected equal treatment under the law. These people did not belong to political parties or collectively organized social movements, but acted individually and sometimes as members of some professional group. The transnational circulation of these ideas ended up contributing to the fall of Pedro I.
