Graffiti in Hip-Hop Culture: Relationships between Language, Identity, and Urban Space from the Transperipheral and Undisciplinary Perspective of Applied Linguistics

ABSTRACT:

This article addresses the importance of graffiti in hip-hop culture and its relationship with language, identity, and urban space. Although it is an important form of artistic expression, graffiti is often perceived as an act of vandalism that discomforts individuals who view the world through the lens of neoliberal capitalism. The text argues that this stigma is a way to perpetuate discourses and marginalization of individuals based on race, gender, and social class. This qualitative research will adopt a critical perspective to understand linguistic phenomena, as highlighted in the researcher’s bricoleur approach ( Denzin; Lincoln, 2006DENZIN, N. K.; LINCOLN, Y. S. O planejamento da pesquisa qualitativa: teorias e abordagens. 2. ed. Porto Alegre: Artmed, 2006. 432p.), in order to navigate through distinct and converging fields of knowledge. Through interviews conducted with the participants in this study, it is possible to perceive that graffiti is considered a product of a linguistic dispute in urban landscapes and also a focal point in studies of new literacies ( Mattos, 2011MATTOS, A. M. de A. Novos letramentos, ensino de língua estrangeira e o papel da escola pública no século XXI. Revista X, v. 1, n. 1, p. 33-41. 2011. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.5380/rvx.v1i1.2011.22474.

). The article discusses how graffiti can represent a form of re-existence ( Souza, 2009SOUZA, Ana Lúcia Silva. Letramentos de reexistência: culturas e identidades no movimento do hip-hop. ), also finding support in the perspective of undisciplinary applied linguistics ( Moita Lopes, 2006MOITA LOPES, L. P. da (org.). Por uma Lingüística Aplicada Indisciplinar.
