Neoliberal rationality and conjugality at the Universal Church: The conversion of homo oeconomicus into family-company and the submission of women

Abstract: This research seeks to understand the subjectivation processes used by the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God in guiding the subjects enrolled in it, especially women in conjugal relations. From ethnographic research carried out in the “Terapia do Amor” liturgies in temples in Vitória / ES and São Paulo / SP, we observe how the church's power technologies pursue the conversion of the moral subject into a neoliberal economic rationality, stimulating homo oeconomicus towards family entrepreneurship. Based on the analytic of power by Foucault, we analyze how, in this family-company model, a dual role of women is played: an unconditional submission to the husband and a fundamental agent for the family's prosperity.
