About the journal

Basic information

Horizontes Antropológicos (Qualis A1) is published thrice yearly by the Department of Post-graduation Studies in Social Anthropology at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. Initiated in 1995, it represents the Department's constant efforts to publish a high-quality academic journal with international reach.Considered as one of the main Brazilian publications in the area of Anthropology, it is included in the databases of the main international indexers.

Its numbers are thematic, open to the plurality of interpretations and themes that may be of interest to Anthropology and related areas. Each issue also includes a section called Open Space, dedicated to the publication of works of excellence and with theoretical density in the field of anthropology, written by researchers with international recognition among their peers regarding the mastery of the topic addressed. They are preferably invited by the editors.

Horizontes Antropológicos publishes texts in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English. All submitted articles must be unpublished and must not have been sent simultaneously to another publication or editorial body. As a general rule, the articles received are presented for prior evaluation by the editors and then submitted to external reviewers. There is no fee for submission and evaluation of articles.

Horizontes Antropológicos is signatory to DORA and operates according to the parameters of Open Science.

The abbreviated title of the journal is Horiz. antropol., form which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic notes.

History

Horizontes Antropológicos is published by the Department of Post-graduation Studies in Social Anthropology of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (PPGAS/UFRGS). Conceived by professor Sérgio Alves Teixeira (in memoriam), one of the founders of the Program, the magazine launched its first thematic issue in January 1995. “Gender” completed a long-term project: the regular edition of a highly qualified academic journal with international scope. The consolidation of the project was stimulated with the support of the Program for Supporting the Editing of Journals (PAEP), conceived in 1994 by the Pro-rectory of Research and Postgraduation Studies at UFRGS. The journal's first editor was Sérgio Alves Teixeira, who until February 2020 was its honorary editor. Initially, Horizontes Antropológicos published two thematic issues per year. Since 2017, this publication became quarterly.

Horizontes Antropológicos has its roots in two previous publications. One of them is Caderno de Estudos, published by the Postgraduation Course in Anthropology, Politics and Sociology, closed in 1989. Mimeographed, modest in appearance and with reduced circulation, reached 14 issues. The other is Cadernos de Antropologia, which appeared in 1990 and ended in 1994. With good graphic quality, a colorful cover and a circulation of 200 copies, Cadernos had 12 issues published.

Among the Qualis A1 journals in the area of Anthropology and Archeology, Horizontes Antropológicos stands out for the publication of thematic articles. This allows it to gather original texts by anthropologists from different countries and who work on the same theme. The combination of thematic publication with the diversity of languages (Portuguese, Spanish, French and English) and with the institutional diversity of the authors makes each edition a bibliographic reference. Another singularity is the choice and proposition of innovative, multidisciplinary and current themes. In this sense, the journal plays an active role in the renewal of the area and in opening new horizons for research and academic debate. Alongside with the editors, the organizers of every issue have a fundamental role in proposing themes and selecting articles, giving the journal greater coverage.

Although dedicated to thematic issues, the journal maintains, through the “Open Space” section, the publication of articles of excellent quality that are not related to the theme of the issue. These articles are based on cutting-edge research and are written by researchers with international recognition among their peers.

Peer review

Horizontes Antropológicos works with thematic numbers. The papers submitted are initially evaluated by the editors and the issue’s coordinators to verify if they are in accordance with the proposed theme, have sufficient theoretical density and are in accordance with the Guidelines for Authors. The works approved in this first phase are sent to consultants in the area of knowledge with proven scientific production for evaluation in the “double-blind” model. The identities of evaluators and authors are hidden from both parties. The recommendations of the peer reviews can be: “accept”, “accept with modifications” and “reject”.

The evaluators observe the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the Anthropology area;
  • Adequacy of the title, abstract and keywords to the content;
  • Consistency of the theoretical argument; clarity of the theme, objectives and arguments; writing quality;
  • Integration between theoretical input and field data (in case of ethnographic works);
  • Consistency, updating and pertinence of the bibliography and references;
  • Suitability of illustrations and tables (when applicable).

After the peer review, the articles are sent to the final decision of the editors and coordinators, based on the peer reviews.

The results of the evaluation are sent via email to the authors at the end of each stage. The entire evaluation process, from receiving the article to the final result, takes up to six months; the average rejection rate by volume is 65 to 75%.

The publication of approved articles follows the periodicity of the journal: January, June and September. Our issues are also available online on the 10th of the month of launch on our Scielo page.

2.3 As an expression of transparency and recognition of the different contributions to the research, the final text, in the case of approval for publication, must inform at the end, in a precise manner, the specific contributions of each author. The authors should also formally specify potential conflicts of interest in their research.
