Brief Background
Nova Economia is a journal published by the Department of Economic Sciences at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais since 1990, publishing articles and reviews on theoretical and applied economics and related areas. The journal adopts a pluralist approach, open to different currents of economic thought and research methodologies. From 2024 (volume 34), Nova Economia will adopt the continuous publication system, thus speeding up the publication of each accepted article. Three issues a year are published on a continuous basis. Its abbreviated title is Nova econ., which should be used in bibliographies, footnotes and bibliographical references and strips. |
Open Science Compliance
This journal follows the Gold Open Access model. Authors are asked to complete and submit the Open Science compliance form with the manuscript. This form should indicate: (a) whether the manuscript is a preprint and, if so, its location; (b) whether data, program codes and other material underlying the text of the manuscript are properly cited and referenced; and, (c) whether they accept openness options in the peer review process. |
Ethics in Publication
Nova Economia adopts the ethical guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) in relation to issues of negligence, code of conduct and good practice in research. Nova Economia observes the relevant ethical standards for publishing in scientific journals. In this sense, any form of unethical behavior, including plagiarism, is strictly forbidden. By submitting articles for publication, authors affirm that the content is original and ensure that the work has not been published or is under review in another journal (with the exception of the preprint policy mentioned above under "Compliance with Open Science"). All articles involving any research with human beings must provide all relevant details on ethical procedures, and include documentation of approval by a recognized Ethics Committee (the Plataforma Brasil of the National Health Council is suggested as a reference). Allegations of misconduct before and after publication should be addressed to the journal, the editor-in-chief and/or the members of the Editorial Committee. |
Focus and Scope

Editorial Policy
Preprints Nova Economia accepts the publication of preprint articles on public platforms, such as RePEc, SSRN, Preprints, SciELO Preprints, EconStor, or Zenodo, so that they can be widely and openly discussed before being published. To this end, it is requested that prior deposit be informed in the submission process and, in particular, explained in the Open Science Compliance Form (https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/Formulario-de-Conformidade-Ciencia-Aberta.docx). Peer review process Nova Economia receives far more manuscripts for evaluation than it is able to publish. For this reason, the evaluation process aims to approve only those articles with relevant contributions to the literature. The editorial team has worked hard to reduce the time it takes to evaluate and publish articles, and the Continuous Publication model is a key element in this process. All articles submitted to Nova Economia follow these procedures: Prior evaluation: (a) the editorial team checks that the manuscript complies with the submission rules; (b) the editors consider sending the manuscript for peer review, evaluating in particular the relevance and topicality of the topic, as well as the article's adherence to the journal's editorial line. If one of the above requirements is not met, the article is rejected directly by the editors within 15 days. Peer review (double blind review): once pre-selected, the manuscripts are evaluated by anonymous reviewers chosen from among experts in the field or members of the Editorial Board. In keeping with the principles of Open Science, authors and referees can grant permission for their identities to be revealed. Authors can make this decision explicit using the Open Science Compliance Form mentioned above, and referees can communicate directly with the journal's editors. In this way, the referees are given the opportunity to talk directly to the corresponding authors about whether or not to open their identities. The referees are asked to issue a definitive recommendation between the following options: 1) Accept; 2) Make Mandatory Corrections; 3) Resubmit for evaluation; 4) Submit to another journal; 5) Reject and 6) See Comments. When a manuscript receives a large number of changes, it is common to recommend resubmitting a modified version of the manuscript. Nova Economia asks the referees to give their opinion within 6 weeks. Once the reviews have been issued, the editors make the following decisions: "Approved"; "Approved with Modifications", "Resubmission"; "Rejected". If the manuscript is recommended "Proceed with Mandatory Corrections", the authors must send the corrected version within 30 days, when they will be notified. If they do not submit a request for an extension with justification, the article will be rejected and archived. When they receive the modified version, the editors will decide whether to send the new version to the same referees, send it to new referees, or make a final decision. When the article is "Rejected", the authors will be notified by the system with the reasons for the rejection and the article will be archived. When the article is accepted, the authors will be notified via the system, together with the opinions received, and the file will be sent for editing. Accepted articles must be published by the third issue (within one year), except for those in foreign languages or those selected by specific editorial decisions. Open data Nova Economia allows and encourages the sharing of the data and analysis tools used, made available in open online repositories, such as Zenodo, Figshare and OSF, if they cannot be published in the work itself, and this information must be indicated in the manuscript. Fees Nova Economia does not charge any fees for submitting, evaluating, processing and publishing articles. Ethics and Misconduct, Correction and Retraction Policy Any ethical violations are brought to the attention of the Editorial Committee in order to resolve conflicts and take the appropriate measures, such as referral to higher authorities at the University. Nova Economia strictly follows the ethical guidelines for publishing and combating scientific misconduct of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Any cases of plagiarism, falsification of data, duplication of publications, undeclared conflicts of interest or other forms of scientific misconduct, once identified, will be treated seriously by the Committee and Editorial Board. The journal reserves the right to take the necessary measures. Corrections and retractions may be made once scientific misconduct has been discovered or in cases of serious errors such as plagiarism or falsification of data, always after careful investigation and, where appropriate, consultation with external experts. In the event of a retraction, this will be clearly identified as such and will remain linked to the original article on the journal's website, maintaining the transparency and integrity of the academic record. The entire process will be monitored by the editor-in-chief. The journal will take action in cases of misconduct: Good Practice Guide: https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/Guia-de-Boas-Praticas-para-o-Fortalecimento-da-Etica-na-Publicacao-Cientifica.pdf Guide to registration and publication of Errata: https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/guia_errata.pdf Guide to registering and publishing retractions: https://wp.scielo.org/wp-content/uploads/guia_retratacao.pdf Policy on Conflict of Interest During the submission process, all authors are informed that submitting manuscripts through the system means that they are declaring that they have no personal, commercial, academic or financial conflict of interest in the manuscript. All authors are instructed to clearly state potential conflicts of interest in the text of the article, such as those linked to financial relationships that could lead to future questions if the material is published without the relevant information. Any violations will be brought to the attention of the Editorial Committee in order to resolve conflicts and take the appropriate measures, such as referral to higher authorities at the University. All referees are warned that they must inform the editor of any conflicts of interest they may have with the content of the article to be evaluated. Likewise, the Nova Economia Statute stipulates that the Editor-in-Chief must inform the Editorial Committee of any conflict of interest that may exist in relation to any article submitted. In this case, one of the members of the Editorial Committee will replace the Editor in the process of evaluating the article in question. Adoption of similarity software Nova Economia uses the iThenticate/CrossRef system to identify duplicate content in all submissions received. In proven cases of duplicate content, the submission in question will be automatically rejected, without prejudice to other applicable measures. Gender and Sex Issues The editorial team of Nova Economia, as well as the authors who publish in the journal, should always observe the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines. The SAGER guidelines comprise a set of guidelines that guide the reporting of sex and gender information in study design, data analysis, results and interpretation of findings. In addition, Nova Economia observes the gender equity policy in the formation of its editorial board. Ethics Committee When articles contain research results that include the collection of primary data related to individuals, authors must submit a separate file describing the background to the research, as well as an opinion from the Ethics Committee of their institution or another widely recognized one (the Plataforma Brasil of the National Health Council is suggested as a reference). Types of documents accepted
Nova Economia publishes original and review articles in Portuguese, Spanish and English. |
Authors' Contribution
For texts with more than one author, all authors must be indicated on the submission registration page, and the role(s) of each author in the production of the article must be specified, according to the CRediT Taxonomy. |
Manuscript Preparation
Nova Economia publishes articles and article reviews in Portuguese, Spanish and English. Nova Economia works with a preferential queuing policy for articles written in English. Articles in English that are approved for publication will be included in the next issue that is still in the early stages of editorial preparation. The contribution must be original and unpublished, and not under review by another publication. None of the author(s) must have had an article approved for publication in the journal in the last 12 months (except in the case of special issues). None of the author(s) or co-authors may have another article submitted for evaluation at the same time. It is not permitted for an author to have more than one article simultaneously under evaluation in the journal. Authors who have had an article approved for publication in the journal must wait twelve months from the date of final acceptance of the last article before submitting it again (with the exception of special issues). Authors must exclude all information from the file that could identify them as such. Author identification must be removed, guaranteeing the journal's confidentiality criteria for peer review. The authors of the document must exclude their names from the text, with the literal "Author" and year used in references and footnotes, instead of the authors' names, title of the article, etc. In Microsoft Office documents, author identification should be removed from the file properties (see the File menu in Word > File > Save as > Tools or > Security > Remove personal information from file properties when saving > Save (the same in Options on Mac). In PDFs, remove names from the Document Properties. The article's introduction should clearly present the research problems addressed as well as its contributions, taking into account the relevant literature. Files for submission should be sent in editable formats such as Microsoft Word, OpenOffice or RTF (as long as they do not exceed 2MB). Manuscripts submitted to the journal should not exceed 8,500 words, particularly for applied work. Articles of up to 10,000 words may be accepted, however, to cover a wider range of areas. The minimum length of manuscripts is 6,000 words, with exceptions justified at the time of submission. The word limits given include all pre- and post-textual elements, such as a list of bibliographical references and annexes. The manuscripts will be evaluated while preserving the anonymity of the authors and reviewers during the evaluation process (double-blind review). However, in keeping with the principles of Open Science, authors and reviewers may grant permission for their identities to be revealed in direct communication to the journal's editors. Databases and analysis tools used that cannot be published in the paper itself can be made available in open online repositories (e.g. Zenodo, Figshar and OSF). This information should be explained in the manuscript. Citations must be in the following format: ABNT NBR 10520 (2023). The full reference to the work cited should appear at the end of the text, in the References. Only material cited in the text should be listed in the References. Authors should not use acronyms to identify works, as this compromises the automated process of identifying references. All submissions should use the ABNT NBR 6023: 2023 standards. URLs of references must be provided, including dates of last access. |
Article Submission Format
The text should be double-spaced; use 12-point Times New Roman font; use italics instead of underlining (except for URL addresses).
|
Sending manuscripts
Papers must be submitted exclusively via the Nova Economia magazine website, at the following address: <http://revistas.face.ufmg.br/novaeconomia>. Registration in the system and subsequent access, using a login and password, are mandatory for submitting papers, as well as for monitoring the ongoing editorial process |
Digital Assets
Once the manuscript has been approved for publication, all illustrations (graphs and figures) must be submitted in separate electronic files in an editable format. Graphs and other vector drawings should be sent in TIFF, EPS or PDF format, with a minimum resolution of 1200 dpi, accompanied by the source file from which they were generated (e.g. Microsoft Excel). Other figures, such as photographs and scans, must be sent in TIFF, JPEG or PNG format with a minimum resolution of 300 dp |
Citations and References
The journal follows the ABNT formatting standard for academic papers. References should come after the last element of the text or after the acknowledgments, if there are any. They must be in alphabetical order with no indentation on the second line, with justified alignment and without skipping blank lines from one reference to another. References must follow the current regulations. At the moment this is ABNT NBR 10520 (2023). The basic forms of references are presented and exemplified below:
Supplementary Documents
Authors are asked to fill in and submit with the manuscript the Open Science compliance form and other documents such as the ethics committee approval form, where appropriate. |
Financing Statement
Authors need to inform sources of support for the work, including names of sponsors, public and private funding received for the production of the article, contract number (if any), except those obviously expressed by their institutional affiliation, together with explanations of the role of these sources. |
